Overview Peace officers help ensure our communities are safe and secure places where we can live, work and raise families. The provincial government introduced the Public Security Peace Officer Program in to provide different levels of government and quasi-government with the authority to employ peace officers for community safety enhancement or specialized law enforcement purposes. Governed by the Peace Officer Act , the program allows the provincial government to designate agencies as employers of peace officers and to give individuals peace officer status for specific job functions.
Authorized employers of peace officers must properly manage their programs in accordance with the Act. The program provides for a wide range of duties and functions and identifies four categories of peace officer.
Not every Public Safety officer is a peace officer. A peace officer has the sworn authority to make arrests within University properties and areas that are immediately adjacent to University boundaries. Peace officers undergo additional extensive training—at least hours of classroom and field training—in topics including NYS laws, diversity and disability awareness, de-escalation techniques, and dealing with emotionally distraught persons.
Then, they can be sworn in as peace officers. Peace officers and Public Safety officers have the same general duties except that peace officers are able to arrest for a criminal offense. Some of our sworn peace officers are armed.
